The Sustainable Masonry Construction (SUMACON) network was established as part of the UK government’s drive to promote sustainability across British industry. Funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, under their call for network proposals in the sustainable use of materials, SUMACON is a research-based network that aims to identify collaborative research projects and develop and promote new technologies and materials for use in the building industry.

The primary objective of the network is to promote collaboration between academia and industry. The identification of applications where materials substitution could bring environmental benefits and technologies which will allow more effective recycling of building materials has emerged as important areas.

Network Mission

(i) Promote the greater use of sustainable materials in UK construction
(ii) Analysis of UK lime production capabilities
(iii) Lifetime assessment of buildings
(iv) Public awareness
(v) Incorporation of waste material into hydraulic lime mortars
(vi) Implementation of energy saving and environmentally friendly building practices for large scale (vii) building projects
(viii) Encouragement of collaboration between academia and industry
